One of my wishes for this coming year is to spend more quality time with the Bear.
She is growing up far too fast, and I want to make sure I hold on to these last few moments of her childhood, before the teenage years arrive. Before I know it, she’ll be disappearing out with her friends and an afternoon with mummy will be the last thing on her mind.
So when we were very kindly invited by Betty’s in Harrogate to sample their Lady Betty Afternoon Tea, it’s hard to say which of us was more excited.
After all, Betty’s is a firm favourite in our house, and although we often pop in for cake, neither of us had ever tried their afternoon tea.
So What Do We Love About It?
Betty’s exemplifies exceptional service, delicious food and beautiful surroundings – it’s a traditional tea room at its very best.
The cakes are to die for, the hot chocolate the best in the world and the staff go out of the way to make any occasion special.
It is quite simply our happy place.
So What’s So Special About The Lady Betty’s Afternoon Tea?
The Lady Betty’s Afternoon Tea is served in the Imperial Room, the only place in Harrogate where you can book your trip to Betty’s in advance.
And that, I was to discover was a whole other level of serenity. From the incredible staff, to the piano being played in the corner and the incredible views of the stray you are completely spoilt from the moment you step through the door.
Staff took our coats, led us to our seats, and left us to study the comprehensive tea menu. If I’m honest though, our eyes were only on the cake menu, and we were both more than a little excited by what we saw!
When the food arrived our excitement continued. The prawn cocktail appetiser not only looked beautiful but tasted Devine.
This was followed by a beautiful miniature pork and apple pie and a smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill roulade. The presentation was exquisite, but even that couldn’t do justice to how delicious it tasted.
Perhaps it was the sandwiches that impressed me the most though. Betty’s really had thought of everything. From delicate grown up sandwiches that included coronation chicken, egg mayonnaise and roast Yorkshire ham with tomato pate, to plainer child friendly versions for the Bear.
The children’s tea was everything a parent could have dreamt of, grown up and special looking and yet quickly devoured without a fancy ingredient in sight. Meanwhile the adult version oozed decadence. The perfect balance for a mother daughter treat.
And then of course came the moment we had both been waiting for. The cake. Well really I should say scones and cakes plural, because there was quite a selection.
First were some of the most incredible scones I’ve ever tasted, with jam (which the Bear declared was the best she’d ever had) and cream.
These were swiftly followed by a selection of the most delicate (and delicious) cakes I have ever had the good fortune to eat. My favourite was the Grand Cru Chocolate and raspberry square whereas the Bear being far more of a fruit fan, declared the fresh fruit meringue to be the best.
How About From An Autism Point Of View?
The Bear’s Asperger’s means that at times she can find eating out hard. Cafes can be busy, chaotic, noisy and unpredictable. She loves the idea of going, but once she gets there her anxiety all too often kicks in. Betty’s is none of those things. It is calm, it is serene, it is happiness. Betty’s is one of the few places I can take my daughter and guarantee it will be a success.
They are also wonderfully flexible with their menu and will make any adjustments you need to make it work for you.
Will We Be Going Back Again?
The answer to that question is definitely a resounding yes!
Our Lady Betty Afternoon Tea was an experience, I don’t think either of us will forget. It will be one of those memories that when I’m old, I’ll look back on and cherish. The look of wonder on the Bear’s face as she stepped into the Imperial room is one that will stay in my head for a long time.
We all need to take time to relax once in a while, time to be spoilt, and time to enjoy our family. In our house Betty’s is easily one of our favourite places to do all of those things.
If you haven’t already, why not visit? We’d love to know if you love it as much as we do.
